Circular RNA (circRNA) is a new type of RNA that is different from traditional linear RNA. It has a closed ring structure and is abundantly present in the eukaryotic transcriptome. Most circRNAs are composed of exon sequences, which are conserved in different species and have expression specificity in tissues and different developmental stages. Because circRNA is insensitive to nucleases, it is more stable than linear RNA, which gives circRNA a clear advantage in the development and application of new clinical diagnostic markers. In addition, recent studies have shown that circRNAs act as miRNA sponges in different species and are called competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), which can competitively bind to miRNAs and thereby regulate the expression of target genes. This shows that circRNA may play a very important role in disease regulation by competitively binding to disease-related miRNAs.
